Microsoft unveils Edit: a new minimalist text editor for Windows 11

Microsoft is currently developing Edit, a new "lightweight" text editor for Windows 11. Occupying a mere 230 KB, it is positioned as a modern reinterpretation of the classic MS-DOS Editor, maintaining minimal resource requirements while offering an interface inspired by Visual Studio Code.

This editor addresses user criticism from those who valued Notepad for its simplicity but faced an expansion of its functionality after WordPad's discontinuation. Edit is designed for individuals seeking the most straightforward and fastest text editor available. It launches via the command line: to open a file, one simply types edit in the terminal and presses Enter. Edit facilitates switching between documents, navigating to specific lines, and performing other fundamental operations. It is important to note that it does not support formatting, AI functionalities, or other advanced capabilities; it is a "pure" text editor exclusively focused on speed and minimalism.

Currently, Edit has one significant limitation: the absence of a direct file-saving function. After editing, text must be copied to another application (e.g., Notepad, Visual Studio Code, or Word). According to PCWorld, this is attributed to the program being under active development, with its functionality slated for future refinement. Presently, Edit is only accessible via installation from GitHub. Microsoft has confirmed plans to make it a "standard text editor, but only for the command line," in the near future.
