Cooperation for Green Energy: Turkmen Delegation Visits German University

A delegation from Turkmenistan visited Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) in Germany and held talks with the university management on establishing cooperation to implement sustainable development strategies. A three-year project on this topic has already started at MLU.

The visit of the Turkmen delegation took place within the framework of the EU for Green Turkmenistan Programme, funded by the European Union and the German Foreign Ministry. As part of this Programme, MLU is implementing a sub-project funded with approximately 580,000 euros. The aim of the project, which is based at the Department of Geoecology, is to support scientific cooperation and dialogue between the EU and Turkmenistan over the next three years. Among other things, it aims to reduce emissions of methane and other greenhouse gases. A formal cooperation agreement between MLU and its Turkmen partners is expected to be signed in the autumn.

The Turkmen delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Energy and the State Energy Institute. During its almost week-long stay in Germany, the delegation also held discussions with representatives from the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, the Federal Ministry of Research, the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and the Clausthal University of Technology.

MLU, and in particular the Institute of Geosciences and Geography, have had research contacts in Central Asia for decades. Since 2019, the university has opened an office abroad in Kazakhstan. Affiliated with this office is the federally funded Central Asia Sustainable Innovation Bureau (CASIB), which also serves as the interface for the project, which is currently being funded, with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) acting as the specific funding provider.
