Pingyang County - from tannery hub to pet industry capital
05.08.2025 | 14:25 |Pingyang County, located in the southeastern Chinese province of Zhejiang, has undergone a remarkable transformation, shifting from a major leather production center to a veritable haven for pet lovers. This change in identity, driven by environmental concerns, has created a thriving industry that now defines the city's economic life.
Twenty years ago, Pingyang was home to over 1,200 leather enterprises. However, this industry created severe environmental problems. Recognizing the potential in repurposing leather production waste, local entrepreneurs began turning it into high-quality pet chews. One of the first to seize this opportunity was Chen Zhenbiao, who founded Peidi Animal Nutrition Technology Co., Ltd.
Today, Pingyang is a recognized leader in the pet industry. On a single street in Shuitou, Chonglelu, two publicly traded pet supply companies deliver products worldwide. In 2024, approximately 100 local enterprises generated more than 5 billion yuan in revenue. The county accounts for over half of China's pet chew exports and a third of its leash production. Companies have not only expanded their product lines to include pet food, toys, clothing, accessories, and even pet-friendly ice cream, but they have also successfully pivoted from export-focused models to serving China's rapidly growing domestic market.
This transformation is evident not only in manufacturing but also in the county's cultural life. Pingyang has established the "Pet Town" exhibition complex and launched a livestreaming center that supports over 50 local brands. Additionally, local vocational schools now train pet care specialists, ensuring a steady supply of skilled labor for the industry.
As part of its new strategy, Pingyang is developing pet-friendly tourism, offering specialized hotels, campsites, and transportation options that accommodate pets. This comprehensive approach to industry and tourism has made Pingyang County a recognized leader in the pet goods sector and a prime example of successful economic transformation. Today, murals of animals adorn the city's streets, and themed events and competitions make it a unique destination for pet owners and their four-legged friends.
