ASHGABAT, April 6 | ORIENT. Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov received new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea Lee Won-jae. During the meeting, the diplomat presented copies of his credentials, the Foreign Ministry press service reported.
The parties emphasized that the trusting contacts between the leaders of the two countries remain the foundation of the Turkmen-Korean partnership. High-level visits serve as a catalyst for political dialogue and set the pace for interparliamentary and economic ties.
During the talks, special attention was paid to expanding cooperation between the business communities, where Korean companies already hold strong positions in Turkmenistan's energy and chemical sectors; developing projects in education, culture, and sports; and strengthening cooperation within multilateral formats.

Lee Won-jae assumes his post as Ambassador to Ashgabat as one of Seoul's most experienced diplomats. As ORIENT previously reported, he has over 30 years of service under his belt, including leading the Korean Foreign Ministry's Economic Cooperation Department and serving as a diplomatic mission in Kyrgyzstan (2021–2025).
His experience as a professor at the National Diplomatic Academy of Korea and as a coordinator at the Ministry of Defense underscores Seoul's strategic choice: the new Ambassador possesses deep expertise in both security matters and the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects, which will be highly relevant to the current agendas of Ashgabat and Seoul.
