Transit potential of Turkmenistan is a promising investment direction

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at a recent meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Moscow invited the EAEU countries to consider the possibility of joint investments in the construction of infrastructure in the sea and dry ports of Turkmenistan and Iran. In his opinion, this will significantly expand the geography of exports of the member states of the Union, strengthen their logistics capabilities.

In this context, there are a number of promising areas of investment cooperation with Turkmenistan, which, due to its geographical location, plays an important role in the development of the global supply chain. Here, special importance is attached to the Kazakhstan―Turkmenistan―Iran steel highway, which has become a strong link in transportation along the North-South corridor. The development of its Eastern branch, according to economic calculations, will require less capital expenditures compared to other routes.

Among the dry ports of Turkmenistan are the border Serahs and Akyaila, connected by land routes with the Caspian seaport of Turkmenbashi. Another direction is being developed – through the Artyk railway station, where a private cargo terminal for transshipment of goods between railway and road transport has been built and started functioning.

The construction of a new highway Turkmenbashi – Garabogaz - the border of Kazakhstan will also contribute to the growth of cargo transportation. Investments in this project will allow to activate cargo and passenger communications between the two countries, and its expansion to the territory of Kazakhstan and further across Russia will strengthen the international transport and transit infrastructure and improve the quality of logistics services.
