Turkmenistan and Germany: cooperation on "green" development within the EU project

On June 23, a Turkmen delegation, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Energy, and the State Energy Institute, arrived in the Federal Republic of Germany for a familiarization visit. This week-long trip, which will continue until June 28, has been organized by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) as part of the key project "European Union for Green Development of Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Actions on Climate Change for 2024–2028".

The primary objective of the visit is to further strengthen cooperation among Turkmenistan's Ministry of Energy, the State Concern "Turkmengas" and GIZ, building upon the Memorandum of Understanding signed on May 14, 2024. This project represents the European Union's contribution to Turkmenistan's "green" economy development and aims to deepen collaboration between research centers and higher education institutions in Turkmenistan and Europe in the field of sustainable development. The core of the visit involves fostering mutually beneficial cooperation and exchanging experience in the scientific and educational spheres. Specifically, discussions are planned regarding future Memoranda of Understanding with leading German universities—Clausthal University of Technology and Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg—to advance cooperation in scientific research.

A crucial task of this collaboration with these universities is to unite efforts in studying advanced green technologies. This includes reducing carbon emissions, developing renewable energy sources, enhancing energy efficiency, and developing sustainable environmental solutions that contribute to achieving the climate goals of both Turkmenistan and the European Union.

During the initial days of the visit, the Turkmen delegation held a series of significant meetings. Discussions with representatives from the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) covered international energy security, sustainable development, and energy cooperation strategies. At a meeting with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz), the parties explored the potential of renewable energy sources and the implementation of energy-saving technologies and innovative solutions in the energy sector.

In the afternoon, the delegation visited the German Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology (Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft, Forschung und Technologie – BMBF), where they discussed state policy in higher education, funding for scientific research in energy and ecology, and academic exchange programs in renewable energy.

The familiarization working visit of the Turkmen delegation to the Federal Republic of Germany continues, affirming the mutual commitment to developing sustainable and environmentally-oriented cooperation.
