 Turkmen Agencies Consult with ADB on WTO Accession

Ashgabat, August 1 | ORIENT. The Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan held key consultations with an expert from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as part of the country's preparations for accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). This meeting was an important step towards improving foreign economic policy and strengthening Turkmenistan's position in the international trading system.

The consultations were conducted by Zhanar Aitzhan, ADB's Senior Policy Advisor for International Trade and Investment, who has extensive experience. She shared valuable recommendations on all aspects of the negotiation process with the WTO.

The discussions were attended by representatives of the Mejlis, the Ministry of Trade, the Central Bank, the Customs Service and other key agencies. The broad interagency composition emphasized the comprehensive approach that Turkmenistan is taking to this issue.

Ms. Aitzhan covered in detail each stage of WTO accession — from the submission of the Memorandum on Foreign Trade Regime to bilateral negotiations. Particular attention was paid to the importance of interdepartmental coordination and the use of successful international experience, in particular, the practice of Kazakhstan.

The parties also discussed the possibility of expanding technical and expert support from ADB, including trainings and seminars for Turkmen specialists. These measures will help improve competencies in areas such as international standards and intellectual property protection.

Following the meeting, the Ministry of Finance and Economy expressed gratitude to ADB for its assistance and confirmed its readiness to continue cooperation. The recommendations received will form the basis for developing a roadmap that will allow for effective preparation for the next stage of negotiations with the WTO.
