National Pride in Art: “Turkmen Alabay” Exhibition Opened in Ashgabat
16.10.2025 | 18:00 |The Turkmen Alabay — a national treasure, a symbol of courage and loyalty — continues to attract great interest around the world. In honor of this important national value, and within the framework of the “International Year of Peace and Trust”, a thematic exhibition opened on October 15 at the Exhibition Hall of the State Academy of Arts of Turkmenistan.
The exposition featured works by master teachers and talented students of the Academy, encompassing all branches of art. In the presented works — painting, sculpture, carpet weaving, ceramics, jewelry, design, and animation — the image of the Alabay is skillfully portrayed as a fearless guardian of the hearth and a loyal friend.
The artworks highlight the historical significance of the Alabay, as emphasized by Hero Arkadag in his book “The Turkmen Alabay,” where he described its role as a faithful protector of the people.
The image of the Alabay has deep historical roots. This is confirmed by depictions of dogs found on ancient Turkmen carpets and a terracotta figurine from Altyn-depe. Even the ancient pattern called “Dog’s Track” and paw prints discovered on bricks from the Shahrislam monument (9th–14th centuries) show that this dog once served as an amulet.
Today, Alabays play an important role in the work of the military and law enforcement agencies. On the initiative of the Head of the State, the International Association of Turkmen Alabays was established with its headquarters in Ashgabat. Moreover, the Turkmen Alabay Day is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of October.
