Magtymguly Pyragy visited Astrakhan province in the 60-90 years of the XVIII century, lived among the Turkmens in the area of the modern Astrakhan village of Funtovo. In September 2019, the Turkmen school named after the poet was opened here, which was built on the initiative of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, then President of Turkmenistan, and now Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty.

The Consul of Turkmenistan in Astrakhan, Gadam Ilamanov, noted that the opening of a school in the Astrakhan village of Funtovo, built by the decision of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, is a symbol of friendship between the two peoples. Its students not only learn the basics of knowledge, but also learn to appreciate the culture and traditions of the Russian and Turkmen peoples. So, for the anniversary of the Turkmen classic, an exhibition of drawings and a creative essay contest on the topic "The Storehouse of the mind of Magtymguly Pyragy" were held among the school's students.

"I am sure that this event will be of great importance for deepening and strengthening the time-tested bonds of our fraternal peoples," Deputy Minister of Education of Turkmenistan Alexander Amanov said at the opening ceremony of the museum.

"Exactly what Magtymguly put his soul and strength into is now being passed on to children. This cultural bridge, which was built many centuries ago, is preserved and transmitted today," said Maria Shalak, Minister of Education and Science of the Astrakhan Region.

The delegation of Turkmenistan also included schoolchildren from Ashgabat. An excursion to the sights of Astrakhan was organized for them. The children visited the Astrakhan Museum of Local Lore, walked around the Astrakhan Kremlin, the central streets of the city and the Volga River embankment.
