Turkmenistan launches assessment of social protection system

An important project has been launched in Ashgabat that will help make social support in Turkmenistan more effective. The government of the country, together with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the World Bank, launched an assessment of the social protection system using a special CODI tool.

This tool will help determine how the social assistance system currently works, identify its strengths and weaknesses. The main goal is to ensure that social services are fair and cover all those in need, especially those in vulnerable situations.

Representatives of the Ministries of Social Protection and Labor, Finance and Economy, as well as experts from international organizations, took part in the discussion. Colleagues from Armenia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan shared their experience in conducting such assessments.

The meeting participants discussed how the assessment will be conducted, what tasks the working group faces, and how the CODI results have already helped improve social policies in other countries. Now Turkmenistan will take concrete steps to strengthen its social protection system.

“This launch is the beginning of an important journey towards creating a stronger social protection system in Turkmenistan that will take into account the needs of every child, every family, and every person in need of support,” Alexander Nartea from UNICEF said. “Social protection is not just assistance; it is the basis for the development of a society where no one is left behind.”
